Wandering Tom was created to inspire memorable adventures for travellers with reliable local knowledge that is always up to date in a simple, easy to use format.
During my time at the fintech startup Tripcash I was contract over to work on a project called Wandering Tom, an online local guide platform that delivered locally sourced travel guides to travellers from cities around the world.
I entered during the conceptualisation phase of the project and began by running workshops with the stakeholders to determine what they were looking for exactly.
Conceptualisation
These workshops were run while in Shanghai with the key stakeholders, the two founders of the company and a number of employees. The results of these workshops was a tangible breakdown of requirements which could be categorised into different pieces and used in the creation of the design and the database.
From this I created a spreadsheet which broke down all these individual requirements into sections and priorities, so we could determine our versioning.
During these workshops there was a lot of questions, answers, discussions, pushbacks and sketching.
We workshopped, sketched and iterated over a period of 3 days and gathered all the necessary information to begin the creation of the design as well as start the building of the database and backend.
Wireframing & Prototyping
From here I jumped straight into the creation of the low-fidelity wireframe and prototype, as this was the highest level of detail requested.
It started out very rough, with just a basic look and feel but accounting for complete functionality.
From here it moved into a slightly more detailed version, though still low-fidelity. These wireframes would be the foundation of the entire Wandering Tom platform, as they encompassed the design of the the front-end, back-end and administration portion of the website.
Taking user account privileges into consideration and designing the controls to approve, deny and review user profiles and their submitted content.
Handover
The design was signed off and handover was completed. The Wandering Tom team received all created assets along with a functioning prototype.
They then proceeded to develop their platform according to my design.
Update
As of February 2021 the Wandering Tom website is no longer online.
